Municipal Court Dress Code

In order to maintain order and uphold the dignity and decorum of the judicial branch of our government, rules of conduct and dress for litigants, counsel, witnesses, court staff, and spectators will ensure that persons in the courtroom do not obstruct or interfere with the orderly transaction of court business nor degrade or insult the dignity of the judicial proceedings, judicial officers, witnesses, and others in the courtroom.

Shirts and shoes must be worn in the courtroom, and prohibited attire includes:

Heavily soiled work clothing; Bare-midriff outfits, cut-offs, halter tops, muscle shirts; Shorts (permitted for juveniles or if part of a company’s dress code); Tank tops, undershirts, see-through blouses; Swimsuits, lingerie; Athletic uniforms, hats, helmets; Theatrical costumes, face-paint; and clothing emblazoned with obscene words, images, or messages contemptuous or disrespectful of the judicial process. Hats or caps must be removed.

• Electronic devices, cell phones, pagers, etc. must be TURNED OFF.
• All packages, purses, briefcases, etc. are subject to search by bailiff at any time.
• Individuals causing distractions or disruptions are subject to removal from the courtroom.

Court Safety and Security

Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited. If you bring a weapon(s) into the Municipal Court building, you will be asked to take it out to your vehicle. The officer will not hold the weapon(s) until your court business is completed.

You may not bring the following items into the court building

Guns, ammunition, or explosive materials; Box cutters, utility blades, or razor blades; Knives, of any sort, including pocket knives; Illegal drugs;Illegal substances; Mace or pepper spray; or Any other item that security officers believe would compromise the security and safety of the building.

Continuances

The Court will allow only one continuance. Your request must be made at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled Court date and submitted in writing. The clerk will inform you of the next available Court date.
